RWS – Global Gourmet Kitchen Presents Shanghai Chef Extraordinaires

Global Gourmet Kitchen Menu

Xiao Long Bao – These were the three words that came to mind when we heard that authentic Shanghainese cuisine will be showcased at Resorts World Sentosa’s well-loved Global Gourmet Kitchen series. Award-winning chefs from the legendary Lü Bo Lang restaurant have been specially flown in to prepare authentic creations at Feng Shui Inn™.

For the uninitiated, eating the Xiao Long Bao is an art and requires a certain technique. To truly savour the essence of this Shanghai delicacy, it’s not as simple as putting the soup dumpling in your mouth, chewing and swallowing it.

At first, we were concerned about whether we could enjoy the Xiao Long Bao with grace. Our apprehension turned into relief when the sampler menu did not include the commonly-known Xiao Long Bao. Instead, there was a lovely spread of main dishes and dim sum – after all, there is more the Shanghainese cuisine than just Xiao Long Baos. Here are some of our favourites.

GGK Signature Eight Treasures Duck

The Signature “Eight Treasures” Duck was a sight to behold. Stuffed with glutinous rice and “treasures” like chestnuts, ginko nuts and pork bits, the beautifully braised duck is served at special occasions like weddings and birthdays in Shanghai. The exquisitely prepared dish was as delectable as it looked, and the stuffing was not too overwhelming for our taste buds.

GGK Deep Fried Prawns in Shanghai Style

Even if you are not a fan of these crustaceans, we highly recommend the Deep-fried Prawns in Shanghai Style. Glimmering under Feng Shui Inn™’s warm lights, the dish looked invitingly appetising. The crunchy shells were a joy to sink our teeth into, and the meat was surprisingly succulent. If cholesterol level isn’t something you are battling with, you can consider devouring the entire prawn head.

GGK Glutinous Rice with Seafood

At first glance, this dim sum dish looks like a plate of hash browns. But trust us, the Glutinous Rice with Seafood is far more gratifying to munch on. We were advised to eat this with our bare hands, and finish it in three mouthfuls. We did as suggested, and what impressed us was how the fragrance of the glutinous rice and scallops melded into one delightful mix. The taste is just as divine too.

GGK Glutinous Rice Balls with Black Sesame Paste

You are not alone in mistaking these oval-shaped delicacies as quail eggs. The bite-sized Glutinous Rice Balls with Black Sesame Paste were the perfect items to end off the meal. Like Xiao Long Baos, they are meant to be consumed in wholes. The black sesame seed paste from the slightly chilled dim sum dish left a refreshing aftertaste, and you wouldn’t mind popping another one into your mouth.

RWS – World Gourmet Summit 2012 Opening Reception

It would have been a mundane Monday (with abysmally humid weather) but for the anticipation of the start of 11 days of gastronomic pleasures. 6:30 PM at the Maritime Experiential Museum saw the gathering of hosting chefs, guest chefs, and the who’s who of the hosting establishments for an exclusive pre-opening press conference. It was apt that the 16th World Gourmet Summit would kick start at the museum – the sails of the Bao Chuan in the background was a majestic symbol of 16 years of epicurean collaborations, culinary innovation and good taste.

The opening reception at 8pm at Universal Studios Singapore was spectacular and a surprise; who would have thought that the boulevards of a theme park could transform into a setting befitting of gastronomic indulgence? It was a scene right out of a movie: a celebration on the streets of downtown Manhattan. The hosting establishments and wineries set up stations along the street, filling the warm air with the heady smells of the world’s finest flavours.

Circus stars scale dizzy heights

Jun 03, 2011 – The Business Times

CANADIAN circus act Cirque Eloize makes its debut in Singapore with its explosive urban dance and circus act Cirque Eloize iD.

Instead of the stuffy confines of a circus tent, be prepared to be amazed in the comfort of Marina Bay Sands’ Grand Theater, as the two-hour show wows you with incredible displays of acrobatic stunts and tricks that you wouldn’t think were humanly possible.

This is, however, no ordinary circus act. Director Jeannot Painchaud believes in a multidisciplinary approach to his acts, and iD is a modern hybrid of circus and urban dance set against a stunning visual backdrop of computer graphics and electronic soundtrack.

The set is hardly static-lighting and visual effects imbue the act with a dizzying 3-D intensity, where the backdrop of a city in the midst of urban decay just pops right out.

The heavily electronica-laced soundtrack, the original composition of indie artist Jean-Phi Goncalves, infuses the entire act with an incredibly realistic street cred that will speak to the street-roaming young. Think heavy pulsating beats, mingled with elements of hip-hop, rock and trance, and you get a sense of the slightly otherworldly feelings the music inspires.

Woman loses $100,300 to win back $209

Singapore's casino gamble pays off one year on

10 March 2011, YahooNews

A Singaporean woman has lost RM240,500 (S$100,500) at a casino in her desire to recoup an earlier loss of RM500.

The woman said she tried to win the money back by using all her savings as well as borrowing money from others, local media reported.

Junyang700 from popular online forum SgForums commented: “You may be able to say control, but when you are at the gambling table, your mind (tells) you to win back what you lost.”

The woman holds two masters’ degrees and is a professional. She plans on not disclosing it to her family and is looking for loans to dissolve her debts. “I am worried that my husband may divorce me if he finds out,” she said.

Sentosa retailers say business unaffected by termination of free bus rides

12 Sep 2010, CNA

SINGAPORE : It seems that the recent termination of free bus rides to Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has not affected retailers located outside the integrated resort.

While shop owners in RWS were not allowed to be interviewed, those under the Sentosa Leisure Group said it was business as usual.

They said those who make use of the shuttle service usually spend the day at the IR, and don’t explore the rest of the island.

The buses, which used to ferry those living in the heartlands, ended operations two days ago by order of the authorities. – CNA /ls

CPF up and CBF on

2 May 2010, Electric News

When Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited Resorts World Sentosa with his grassroots leaders, each paid $100 for entry to the casino.

“We did not lose,” PM Lee said. “Because we did not gamble.”

It is a safe bet that the sentence summarises the Government’s ethics and its strategy towards crisis: We do not play-play.

Especially when it comes to matters of the state.

Even when it came to the integrated resorts (IRs), he said, “the decision took five years”.

PM Lee was speaking at the NTUC May Day Rally yesterday at Downtown East, a sort of workers’ IR.

It was an assembly of red shirts. And blue, and green, and orange, as 1,400 union leaders, MPs and ministers, gathered for the annual rally of the troops.

The Prime Minister, in a red shirt, then gave the key speech, its high note being the one percentage point increase in the employers’

CPF contribution rate to help workers build up retirement savings.

Mr Lee moved on to raising our productivity, or CBF (cheaper, better, faster): How workers need to improve skills, how firms have to take key decisions to improve productivity, how Government will support companies, and how unions play vital roles in economic strategy.

43 countries warn nationals about visiting Thailand during turmoil

Anti-goverment demonstrators offer prayers ...

2010/04/10

BANGKOK: Embassies of 43 countries in Bangkok have issued warnings to their citizens who are planning to visit Thailand, after the government declared a state of emergency in the capital and nearby provinces during the political standoff, Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Prakit Piriyakiet said.

He said the embassies of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Latvia and Spain have increased their security warning to the highest alert level, recommending their citizens not to travel to Thailand, reported Thai News agency.

Meanwhile, nationals of Russia, Romania, the Philippines, Taiwan, Laos, Hong Kong, Singapore, Greece, Poland and China who intended to visit the country are advised to reconsider their travel plans and to take high precautions.

The British, Belgian, German, Irish, Canadian, Hungarian, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Australian, New Zealand, Israeli, Cambodian, Malaysian and Ukrainian embassies also warned their people to avoid high-risk areas.

Nationals of France, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Austria, Finland, Brazil, the US, Slovakia, Japan, Macao, Bulgaria and Portugal were advised to be especially cautious and avoid zones considered unsafe, especially demonstration areas, and to pay close attention to public information sources.

All 43 embassies urged their nationals to exercise high caution and to be alert in their movements around Bangkok as well as surrounding provinces.

The anti-government Red Shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) has staged a continuing rally since March 13, and gradually intensified its political moves.

Currently the protesters remain at protest venues, Phan Fa bridge and Ratchaprasong intersection.

Due to the escalating protest, including the April 7th invasion of Parliament, the government invoked an emergency decree with an attempt to restore peace. – BERNAMA
