RWS – Global Gourmet Kitchen Presents Shanghai Chef Extraordinaires

Global Gourmet Kitchen Menu

Xiao Long Bao – These were the three words that came to mind when we heard that authentic Shanghainese cuisine will be showcased at Resorts World Sentosa’s well-loved Global Gourmet Kitchen series. Award-winning chefs from the legendary Lü Bo Lang restaurant have been specially flown in to prepare authentic creations at Feng Shui Inn™.

For the uninitiated, eating the Xiao Long Bao is an art and requires a certain technique. To truly savour the essence of this Shanghai delicacy, it’s not as simple as putting the soup dumpling in your mouth, chewing and swallowing it.

At first, we were concerned about whether we could enjoy the Xiao Long Bao with grace. Our apprehension turned into relief when the sampler menu did not include the commonly-known Xiao Long Bao. Instead, there was a lovely spread of main dishes and dim sum – after all, there is more the Shanghainese cuisine than just Xiao Long Baos. Here are some of our favourites.

GGK Signature Eight Treasures Duck

The Signature “Eight Treasures” Duck was a sight to behold. Stuffed with glutinous rice and “treasures” like chestnuts, ginko nuts and pork bits, the beautifully braised duck is served at special occasions like weddings and birthdays in Shanghai. The exquisitely prepared dish was as delectable as it looked, and the stuffing was not too overwhelming for our taste buds.

GGK Deep Fried Prawns in Shanghai Style

Even if you are not a fan of these crustaceans, we highly recommend the Deep-fried Prawns in Shanghai Style. Glimmering under Feng Shui Inn™’s warm lights, the dish looked invitingly appetising. The crunchy shells were a joy to sink our teeth into, and the meat was surprisingly succulent. If cholesterol level isn’t something you are battling with, you can consider devouring the entire prawn head.

GGK Glutinous Rice with Seafood

At first glance, this dim sum dish looks like a plate of hash browns. But trust us, the Glutinous Rice with Seafood is far more gratifying to munch on. We were advised to eat this with our bare hands, and finish it in three mouthfuls. We did as suggested, and what impressed us was how the fragrance of the glutinous rice and scallops melded into one delightful mix. The taste is just as divine too.

GGK Glutinous Rice Balls with Black Sesame Paste

You are not alone in mistaking these oval-shaped delicacies as quail eggs. The bite-sized Glutinous Rice Balls with Black Sesame Paste were the perfect items to end off the meal. Like Xiao Long Baos, they are meant to be consumed in wholes. The black sesame seed paste from the slightly chilled dim sum dish left a refreshing aftertaste, and you wouldn’t mind popping another one into your mouth.

RWS – World Gourmet Summit 2012 Opening Reception

It would have been a mundane Monday (with abysmally humid weather) but for the anticipation of the start of 11 days of gastronomic pleasures. 6:30 PM at the Maritime Experiential Museum saw the gathering of hosting chefs, guest chefs, and the who’s who of the hosting establishments for an exclusive pre-opening press conference. It was apt that the 16th World Gourmet Summit would kick start at the museum – the sails of the Bao Chuan in the background was a majestic symbol of 16 years of epicurean collaborations, culinary innovation and good taste.

The opening reception at 8pm at Universal Studios Singapore was spectacular and a surprise; who would have thought that the boulevards of a theme park could transform into a setting befitting of gastronomic indulgence? It was a scene right out of a movie: a celebration on the streets of downtown Manhattan. The hosting establishments and wineries set up stations along the street, filling the warm air with the heady smells of the world’s finest flavours.

Steering away from the cold detached feeling of buffets, the stations featured live preparations of the dishes, allowing guests to view first-hand the craft behind the final product.

(RWS) How to be a YouTube singing sensation

YouTube Stars Festival at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore

You’ve probably done this before.

While surfing on Youtube, you come across random videos of aspiring musicians. And you click on the play button, thinking it’ll provide you with comic relief like the audition rounds of American Idol. But just that one or two odd times, you  end up with your mouth slightly agape, marveling at the singer on the screen with that soothing soulful voice , and wonder why he or she’s not discovered by some major music producer yet.

Then you develop that secret aspiration of becoming a sensational Youtube star yourself.

Well, if you are harboring such a secret dream, RWScoop is here to help. We’ve put together five easy steps you can take to achieve YouTube superstardom; try, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. Really, really, hope for the best.

*fair warning: decent singing voice preferred

1. Perfect your best mesmerizing gaze

Eyes are the window to the soul, or so they say. Singing’s as much about conveying emotions as it is about sounding great, so communicate with your eyes. Good lighting and practice in front of the mirror would probably help. Of course, if you’re naturally gorgeous, then you’ve got the cheat code down pat.

2. Get your hands on a good camera

Camera phones will never do you justice. Do whatever it takes; even if it means wrangling one from dad.

(Some colour or picture editing will also up your street cred.)

3. Have jamming sessions with other singers

While it probably doesn’t sound very savory, being a superstar is also inescapably about business. YouTube is a community, so spread out and make connections. And it doesn’t have to be stuffy – if there’s anything to be seen from these YouTube stars, collaboration is the word. Go crazy, make a spoof video, or simply jam together.

Loud accessories may help.

4. Know your niche

Songwriting? Being able to melt hearts? Have a distinct facial expression (e.g. a poker face)? Whatever it is, find it, work it, and hold on to it. It makes you special.

5. Be comfortable and confident in your own skin

Somehow you’ll be suave enough that even while stalking a girl in the library, people will love you.

At Resorts World Sentosa, a red carpet affair with Housefull 2

Gazing at the beautiful people and their even more beautiful outfits that grace red carpet events on television is a different exercise from seeing them walk by right in front of you. For one, it’s not all about the glitz and glamour as you’d have expected, as experienced from the red carpet event world premiere of Housefull 2, a Bollywood blockbuster comedy directed by Sajid Khan.

The calm before the storm.

Held at Resorts World Sentosa’s Festive Grand Theatre, the red carpet event attracted hoards of fans and curious passers-by. The media stood by with their intimidating cameras and filming equipment. After all, you don’t get such a big group of Bollywood’s most popular stars dropping by Singapore everyday. There was shouting from fans, yelling from exasperated media and everyone was perspiring in the jostling crowd on that humid evening in Singapore. Probably, the only people who look good at such events are the celebrities themselves. After what seemed like eternity, the boyish Shreyas Talpade appeared on the red carpet, setting off the night’s first round of screams and cheers.

Me! Me! Shake my hands!

Next up, the lovely Shazahn Padamsee and Jacqueline Fernandez flashed their pearlies while the trigger-happy cameramen clicked their gears frantically.

Lovely in red.

Angelic in white.

The ladies had their share of eye candy in the form of the suave Akshay Kumar and the beefy John Abraham. These two Bollywood heavyweights sure know how to make women swoon with their charming smiles.

All smiles.

Also spotted at the red carpet event was Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, who was in Singapore to play at the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic.

One for the photo album.

Our takeaway after spending an evening with shrieking fans, excited journalists and unwavering camera crew? It’s an easier task to walk the red carpet in your best suit or gown, than to be crammed with hundreds of sweating fans at the aisle. Meanwhile, sit back, relax, and enjoy the highlights of the day – complete with greetings from the stars!
